Unless you're American or Canadian, chances are, all you know about Thanksgiving is that Joey got a turkey stuck on his head on an episode of Friends.

All over the United States, however, people are scrambling to baste turkeys and bake pie crusts in anticipation of one of the biggest holidays of the year. So what's all the fuss about? We've got all the info you need in order to discuss—and get hungry for—this food-fueled celebration.

What is Thanksgiving?

We're glad you asked. It's a holiday devoted to sharing gratitude and a massive meal with loved ones. Despite cultural and religious roots, it's become a secular holiday for North Americans of all backgrounds. For its emphasis on family, it bears similarity to Spring Festival in China.

Who celebrates it?

North Americans. Canadians celebrate on the second Monday of October each year. In the United States, Thanksgiving takes place on the fourth Thursday of November.

Where does it come from?

Canada's Thanksgiving origins are contested, but the US traces the holiday back to 1621, when America's Plymouth colonies shared a three-day autumn harvest feast with the Wampanoag Indians. Today, the historic banquet is honored as a symbol of togetherness, harmony, and gratitude.

Woah, hold on a minute. Colonizers and the colonized, united in peace and harmony? What's up with that?

Good call. It was hardly all fun and LOLs back then. While the harvest meal may have marked a brief moment of peace, it was but a blip in a long, bloody history of conflict and Native American genocide at the hands of European settlers. Some Americans take issue with the misleadingly sunny portrait of Thanksgiving taught to schoolchildren and presented to the American public.

That's grim.

Exactly why most people avoid discussion of those dark days on Thanksgiving. Instead, they focus on joy and take the opportunity to celebrate with family and friends.

How exactly do they celebrate?

Food, food, and more food. Americans eat more on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year. (Considering how much they consume on the average day, that's undeniably impressive.) Family and friends spend hours, even days preparing dishes for Thanksgiving dinner.

In addition to catching up and chatting over the meal, hours are clocked in front of the TV for holiday programming like New York City's Thanksgiving Day Parade, an event presented by Macy's department store every year since 1924. It's America's largest and most famous parade, attracting millions of live spectators and television viewers each year. The event features marching bands, floats, dancers, singers, celebrities, and huge balloons shaped like cartoon characters.

In addition to the parade, sports are important. American football is a Thanksgiving tradition dating back to the sport's 19th-century origins. The National Football League (NFL) has hosted games on Thanksgiving Day each year since its inception. Suburban families might also play pick-up games in the backyard before dinner.

Whatever. Back to the food. What do people eat?

First and foremost, turkey. Nine out of ten Americans eat the bird on Thanksgiving.

Other classic staples include stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, cornbread, sweet potatoes, pecan pie, and pumpkin pie.

Since so many Americans and Canadians are the descendants of immigrants, some families augment the traditional meal with foods from the places their grandparents lived before landing in North America. For example, Armenian Americans might eat the tabbouleh and hummus of their ancestral homeland alongside the all-American roasted turkey and stuffing.
