    Initially, road and sea transport carried similar volumes of goods, at approximately 0.5 mkt each in 2001. Subsequently, road transport recorded a significant rise to 3 mkt in 2009, overtaking the other two methods to become the leading mode from 2003 onwards. After growing dramatically to a peak of 5.2 mkt in 2011, the figure declined by 0.4 million tonnes in 2013. It then recovered slightly, reaching 5 mkt in 2015. Sea transport followed a broadly similar upward trend. Its volume peaked at 4.5 million tonnes in 2011, which was comparable to that of road transport two years earlier. Following a minor drop to 4.2 mkt in 2013, its figure remained relatively stable until 2015.

    Rail transport, by contrast, experienced much less significant changes during the period. Although it was the dominant means of transport in 2001 (1.5 mkt), its figure was surpassed by road and sea respectively in 2003 and 2004, falling far behind the other two modes. After a steady increase to 3 mkt in 2011, the volume transported by rail remained unchanged in the next two years, before falling to 2.5 mkt in 2015.
