去年我读了一本小说叫《Stoner》,中文名字叫《斯通纳》。我很喜欢这本书的作者的写作风格,很细腻,真实不造作,他能够用简单的语言写出丰富的感情。读这本书的时候,我做了不少的摘抄。这里就放一个小段吧。
He began to _resent_ the time he had to spend at work on the Foote farm. Having come to his studies late, he felt the _urgency_ of study. Sometimes, _immersed_ in his books, there would come to him the awareness of all that he did not know, of all that he had not read; and _the serenity_ for which he _labored_ was _shattered_ as he realized the little time he had in life to read so much, to learn what he had to know.
他开始憎恨花在农场上的时间,每次回家都感觉到学习的紧迫性。有时候他要把自己埋在书堆里,他辛苦劳动所换来的安逸和恬静就这样破碎了。他知道自己必须要去读书,他必须要去学习。
这段是在写Stoner找到了自己人生的目标之后,重新燃了对学习的热。如果写成“He rekindled his passion/enthusiasm for knowledge“.读起来感觉就如白开水,但是从作者的用词中真的可以体会到那种非常想要渴望一件事情的感觉,好像自己在和时间赛跑,一分钟恨不得掰开成两分钟那样。这就是word choice的魔力,能revoke feelings!

在体会作者的word choice的时候需要从两个角度出发,第一个是单词的字面意思,也叫denotation,是字典就可以查到的;第二个就是connotation,也叫隐含意思,有时候可以把它理解成给“给读者的感觉”。如果不知道字面意思,有时候是很难理解隐含意思的,比如:
The phrases “bristling hairy legs of giants,”” magically draped,” and “masquerading as witchy tresses” primarily serve to
只有先知道这些字面意思之后才能理解隐含意思。“巨人的毛茸茸的腿”“魔法般地覆盖”“女巫的长发”这些给我们一种“哈利波特“的感觉,有点神秘,又有点诡异,因此答案就是:suggest the setting’s otherworldly aspect. 超脱尘世的感觉。当然,这类题其实也有它的解题小技巧,这里不展开讲啦。
并没有一个参考书列出所有的connotation供我们去参考,是否能理解connotation还是要依赖于read extensively,从不同的文章中去体会和收集connotation。我觉得有一句老话放在这里还蛮合适的:读书百遍,其义自现。
