　　When I was in elementary school, I used to beg – yes, I literally begged – my mother for a dollar or two. The excuse was to buy a new eraser, and I wanted to use the money to buy a popsicle of a new flavor that was prevalent. Today, when I am reading the statement given, and recalling the old days twenty years ago, I sincerely believe that children should be given weekly allowance and that the expense of the money should be at their own discretion. I understand that parents have their various fears. The concern may be that children may spend the money as soon as they receive the allowance on Monday, or that children may lose the money, or that the money may be stolen as children may show off the pitiful few dollars. None of those concerns are illegitimate, because there have been such cases. However, if the small amount of money, lost or spent irresponsibly, would actually pay for a lesson that would otherwise incur greater costs – losses – in the future, wouldn’t it be an economical deal parents should take when their children are still young and the prices to pay are still low?
