Doctor Achebe
Today, we’re discussing the effects of various transportation means. Some argue that bicycles are an eco-friendly and healthy alternative to cars, while others believe that relying on outdated modes of transport is not a practical solution to modern traffic problems. What are your thoughts? Should the governments encourage the use of bicycles as a means of transportation?
Claire
I don’t think the government should encourage bicycles as a primary solution. In today's world, we should rely on technology to solve traffic problems, not return to primitive methods. For example, self-driving cars and smart traffic systems can optimize road usage and reduce congestion more effectively than bicycles. Instead of promoting bicycles, the government should invest in advanced technologies that can provide long-term, scalable solutions to traffic issues.
Paul
I believe the government should encourage bicycle use, even if they can’t completely replace cars. Bicycles are a great way to reduce traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions, especially for short-distance trips. For instance, if more people ride bicycles to work or school, there would be fewer cars on the road, which could help prevent traffic incidents. Encouraging bicycle use doesn’t mean abandoning cars altogether, it’s about creating a balanced transportation system that benefits everyone.
I propose that governments should promote the use of bicycles. Paul’s perspective is valid; he noted that the key to addressing transportation problems lies in finding a balance among various modes of travel. In numerous urban areas, the final segment of a commute—commonly referred to as “the last mile,” which encompasses the distance from public transportation stops to either home or the workplace—often proves to be the most complex and inefficient part of the journey.【定语从句】 In this context, bicycles, particularly through ride-sharing services, can play a crucial role in solving the last mile problem. They offer a fast and convenient means of covering short distances while also reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions. Although self-driving cars and smart traffic systems may seemingly decrease the likelihood of congestion, as Claire argued, these solutions do not resolve the parking challenges faced in urban environments.【让步状语从句】 Drivers often spend considerable time searching for parking spaces, especially in downtown areas. In contrast, this is not an issue for cyclists, as bicycles occupy significantly less room than cars.【原因状语从句】 Consequently, a given area can accommodate ten times as many bicycles as cars. Therefore, I believe that authorities should actively encourage the use of bicycles.

segment n.
the last mile n.
encompass v.
ride-sharing service n.
self-driving car n.
smart traffic system n.
In numerous urban areas, the final segment of a commute—commonly referred to as “the last mile,” which encompasses the distance from public transportation stops to either home or the workplace—often proves to be the most complex and inefficient part of the journey.
这句话的主句是“The final segment of a commute often proves to be the most complex and inefficient part of the journey.”
