　　①Do you remember all those years when①scientists arguedthat smoking would kill us but ②the doubters insistedthat we didn’t know for sure?你还记得那些年吗？那是时候，科学家们认为，吸烟致人死亡，但是，那时候，怀疑者们却坚持认为，我们还不能肯定这件事情。
　　这个叫做一般疑问句，核心是：Do you remember all those years？你还记得那些年吗？
　　when部分是定语从句，这里是两个句子，用but连接的：

　　① scientists arguedthat smoking would kill us
　　that部分是宾语从句
　　smoke vt. 吸烟。
　　kill vt. 杀死（double kill，熟悉吧）

　　② the doubters insisted that we didn’t know for sure
　　doubt vt. 怀疑。—— doubter n. 怀疑者（这里是指怀疑科学家说“吸烟会杀死人”这件事情，就是不相信这个的人）
　　that部分是宾语从句
　　for sure：千真万确。

　　②That the evidence was inconclusive, the science uncertain?相关证据是不确凿的，科学也是不确定的。
　　这个句子还是宾语从句，还是insist的宾语从句，所以，这里还把？问号拿过来，下一句也是，就是这句话还是那些“怀疑者”说的。
　　evidence n. 证据（烂大街的）
　　conclusive adj. 结论性的；确凿的。—— inconclusive adj. 不确定的；无定论的。
　　science后面省略了系动词“was”
　　uncertain adj. 不确定的。

　　③That the antismoking lobby was out to destroy our way of life andthe government should stay out of the way?反对吸烟的游说只是为了要破坏我们的生活方式，政府不应该插手（反吸烟）这件事情。
　　这是两句话，用and连接
　　① the antismoking lobby was out to destroy our way of life
　　antismoking n. 反吸烟
　　lobby n. 大厅；休息室；游说团体；游说；vt. 游说。 —— lobbyist n. 说客（以后还会考）
　　be out to do sth：设法做某事
　　destroy vt. 破坏。

　　② the government should stay out of the way
　　stay out of：置身事外；不插手；不介入
　　the way：指“the antismoking lobby”

　　buy vt. 买；相信（尤其是不太可能的事情）
　　nonsense n. 废话；胡说八道；谬论；胡扯；胡言乱语（多年后，还会出现）
　　这里的that nonsense指的是那些怀疑者，也就是怀疑吸烟会死人这件事的人——即：支持吸烟的人：“but the doubters insisted that we didn’t know for sure? That the evidence was inconclusive, the science uncertain? That the antismoking lobby was out to destroy our way of life and the government should stay out of the way? 就是这部分是内容”

　　总结：第一段是说，过去有些年（有段时间），科学家说吸烟会导致人死亡，但是，怀疑者就跳出来说，这是不确定的，没有确凿的证据。而且，怀疑者（支持吸烟的人）还认为，反吸烟是对他们生活的破坏、干预，要让政府不要干预他们的生活（言外之意就是他们有权利选择吸或不吸，不需要别人干涉）。而且，很多美国人还真的就相信了这些话，结果，好多人老早就进了坟墓。（这里的言外之意就是，科学家的话应该听，即使没有证据）
